4.5 million Americans suffer from dog bites every year. Approximately 885,000 of these victims need medical attention and many require surgery. Some do not survive the attack and are killed by a dog bite.
It is Children Who are Most At Risk of Significant Injury
Children are among the three groups identified by the CDC to be most at risk for dog bite injuries. The other two high risk groups include dog owners and adult males. However, of these three risk groups, it is children who are most likely to need medical attention and it is children who are most likely to suffer.
Children are at particular risk of injury primarily because of their size. Regardless of the breed, dogs are more likely to bite a child’s face than an adult’s face because children’s faces are easier to reach. The delicate skin of the face and the proximity of the bite to the eyes, ears, nose and throat make surgery and significant injuries more likely.
Serious Dog Bite Injuries
Children, and adults, who are bitten by dogs, or other domestic animals, may suffer from:
- Scars;
- Fractured or Broken Bones;
- Infections, including Rabies That Can be Fatal; and
- Other Serious Injuries.
Whether you’ve been bitten by a pit bull or a poodle, you are at risk for the above injuries and complications resulting from those injuries.
If you’ve been hurt, if your child has been hurt, or if you’ve lost a loved one in a Pennsylvania dog bite accident then you may be entitled to damages for your medical expenses, lost income, out of pocket expenses and pain and suffering. Contact a dog bite lawyer today for more information about your rights.
